Korda Artistic Productions returns to the Kordazone Stage for the most intriguing of all 'whodunits'—and a much-needed antidote to the mundane. Clue, the iconic 1985 Paramount movie inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, made its way to a COVID-limited seating theatre for its second weekend (Feb. 11, 12, and 13).
For those that may not have played the game or watched the iconic movie starring a cast of Hollywood masters—led by the incomparable Tim Curry—it’s a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. And if you know anything about Korda, you know a killer script in their hands is a surefire good time.
The tale begins at a remote mansion – a set masterfully designed by Matthew Burgess. His use of the staircases centers on a series of doors that take the audience around the stately home with ease. The walls are decorated with items you’d see in an actual stuffy old mansion and the walls made it feel as if we were transformed into a snazzy vintage smoking room or men’s club – the perfect décor for a home owned by someone named Mr. Body.
The story tells of six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by Wadsworth, the butler, Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard race to find the killer as the body count stacks up.
Director Joey Wright somehow manages to make chaos look easy. Clue is a fast-paced show with more twists and turns than the Indianapolis 500. And you have to pay attention or you might actually miss a "clue", like I did - damn you Mrs. White.
David Burrows’ Wadsworth is worth the price of admission alone. His somber demeanor proved to be perfect for storytelling, especially as he leads the cast through a short rundown of events near the end of the show.
Much like the movie, the ensemble cast play off each other extremely well. Much respect to (in no particular order) Alex Hristoff (Cook), Bonnie Stewart (Mrs. White), Brent Oneschuk (Professor Plum), Boris Gatackic (Col. Mustard), Carla Gyemi (Yvette), Dan MacDonald (Mr. Green), Mark Worsley (Mr. Body), Joseph Brohm (Cop/Motorist), Nicole Clark (Miss Scarlett) and Rachel Hillis (Mrs. Peacock), for two hours of engaging fun.
Like the Mounties always getting their man, Korda never fails to get the laughs. Clue is a fun night out and a foolproof way to cure the mundane. The show ran (Friday, Feb. 11) with both evening and matinee shows on Saturday, Feb. 12 and Sunday, Feb. 13. Tickets are $27.54 and available at Eventbrite. COVID regulations were in effect and seating was limited.
