The Sheepdogs and Boy Golden Ignite London Music Hall with a Southern Rock Spectacle

Friday night at London Music Hall was Outta Sight! Saskatoon’s The Sheepdogs put on one hell of a show for the London fans, and Winnipeg’s Liam Duncan, better known as Boy Golden opened the evening with his unique brand of Country Pop-rock.

Coming out with Rock & Roll (Ain't No Simple Thing) from last year’s EP No Simple Thing, The Sheepdogs set the vibe for the evening, an upbeat southern rock party atmosphere. This band is so fun to watch live, and they sound fantastic. They were loud, but the sound was clean and it makes you want to dance.

Newest addition, Gatineau Quebec native Ricky Paquette was a treat to see perform with the band. Ricky is an outstanding guitarist, and he brings a lot to whoever he plays with. On this night, they gave him the spotlight for a lengthy guitar solo and he showed why he is one of Canada’s most in demand guitar players.

There’s no question The Sheepdogs, with their dual guitars, have a southern rock sound reminiscent of The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I’ve always thought there’s something about their harmonies that makes me think of The Guess Who. Well, lo and behold, I found a video of them covering Hand Me Down World from a few years back and they nailed it!

There were four songs from the latest release, Outta Sight, including So Far Gone, which has a Lay Down Sally groove and Scarborough Street Fight, which Ewan Currie said is the band’s favorite song to play. They proved it by turning it into an extended jam, and maybe the best live jam I’ve seen this year.

The rest of the set was a handful of songs from last year’s EP No Simple Thing and from the last five albums. They finished the evening with a cover of Neil Young’s Are You Ready for the Country.

Boy Golden started the night with a lone guitarist on stage, who was gradually joined by the rest of the band, and then finally, Boy Golden himself. Founder, minister and principal songwriter at The Church of Better Daze, Boy Golden could be described as Stoner Country/Alternative Rock. The band already has a sizeable following and there seemed to be a pretty good number of fans in the crowd. The music is catchy and with their three guitar attack they put on a great show for the early crowd.
