Community Rallies for Kaleb's Kourage: Honoring a Young Life Lost to Cancer

Rockin’ For Kaleb’s Kourage, held at Rockstar Music Hall in Windsor on Sunday, November 18 did exactly what it set out to do - raise funds and honour the memory of Kaleb Houle, courageous 13-year-old who succumbed to his third battle against cancer a week prior to the event. The concert was presented by LiUNA 625 with support from David Hunter of The Drive.

Kaleb Houle died on November 11, 2018 after being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer three times since 2014. He was first diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a blood cancer that’s rare in kids, in February 2014. He went into remission after three months of chemotherapy in London. But it returned in December of 2016.

The fundraising show was part of an effort started by Tea Party drummer Jeff Burrows and had raised more than $50,000 in the weeks before the show. He hoped for another $20,000 at the show.

Local bands at the show included Leave Those Kids Alone, The Van Lares, Madeline Doornaert, Disaster Strike, The Formula, The Family Soul and closing the night, ITABITH (Is There A Band In The House), featuring fundraiser organizer Jeff Burrows and former Big Sugar member Kelly Hoppe. Local musician Justin James Jewell, himself a recent cancer survivor, approached Jeff Burrows last minute about participating in the fundraiser and was given a slot to perform a few songs.

519 Magazine photographer Kirk Harris (K&M Photography) stopped in to check it out and meet the family.
