The Black Crowes' 'Shake Your Money Maker' Tour: A Night of Brotherly Rock with The Trews in Windsor

The Black Crowes and The Trews brought some rocking brotherly love to The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor this past Tuesday night. The *Shake Your Money Maker* tour features their debut album in its entirety and several other booty-shaking tunes and had the Windsor audience on their feet for the entire show.

Opening act, Antigonish, N.S. natives The Trews, were a solid pick for the Canadian dates of this tour. The tour could have been renamed The Brothers Tour for the pairing of The Crowes’ Chris and Rich Robinson with Colin and John-Angus MacDonald of The Trews. I was shocked to hear Colin MacDonald say that this was their first time playing The Colosseum but happy that they were supporting such a great band for their first time and a band they are genuinely fond of.

The Trews always put on a high-energy show full of hits and tonight was no exception. From the opening song “Not Ready to Go” to “Poor Ol' Broken Hearted Me” and “Tired of Waiting”, the ten-song set was full of fan favourites. New song “Enemy” from last year’s *Wanderer* album was featured midway and was well received by the Windsor crowd who always shows the love for this talented and underrated group.

The Black Crowes opened with swampy rocker “Twice as Hard” and kept it rolling strong and steady for their roughly 90-minute set. Because the band was so successful with their first couple albums, this show felt like a greatest hits collection. Besides all the tracks from the first album, they also played their three biggest tracks from the second album, “Remedy”, “Hotel Illness” and “Thorn in My Pride”. Musically, this band really brings it with the killer vocals of Chris Robinson and his brother Rich, and Southern blues rock will never go out of style. The band members have changed several times over the years and they’ve gone through several breakups but the core of the band is the brothers Robinson and that bond is hard to break. The chemistry was on the money tonight and the band even added “Virtue and Vice” to the set for the first time since 2013.

The stage design was phenomenal and the lighting was something to behold. There was a large bar set up back left of the stage where an actor dressed as a bartender pretended to watch over things and the other side featured a large porch where the two backup vocalists were featured. There was a variety of spotlights, LED effects and hanging incandescent bulbs that gave the feel that you were in a giant blues club somewhere in the south.

Kudos to The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor for bringing big shows back to Windsor again. We’ve been starving for this kind of entertainment and it’s back in a big way.
