Cardinal Music Productions is bringing the cult classic film "Young Frankenstein" to the stage in a musical adaptation that promises to be both uproariously funny and highly entertaining. Bayleigh Cardinal, the production's musical director, recently sat down to discuss the challenges and highlights of producing this beloved show.
According to Cardinal, the decision to produce "Young Frankenstein" was based on a desire for a high-energy, upbeat production that would offer a departure from the more serious shows the company had done in the past. The musical's comical score contributes to the show's appeal and gives new life to a well-known story.
"We were looking for a show that was upbeat and a departure from some of the other shows we've done this year," said Cardinal. "Young Frankenstein offered a funny, high-energy solution for the spot. It is also a show that gives the opportunity for many cast members to shine, as it is filled with great music and dance."
As a cult classic, "Young Frankenstein" has many memorable scenes, but for Cardinal, the most iconic moment is when the monster and Frederick sing "Puttin' on the Ritz." Brandon Presley, who plays the monster, and Caiden Finlay, who plays Frederick, deliver a fantastic performance in this number.
The music in the show captures the comedic style of the movie and elevates the moments of humor to the next level. The cast uses the music to reflect the show's style and bring their characters to life in a fun and entertaining way.
"The music for the show is equally as comical as the show itself," she said. "It helps bring something different to a story that many know and love."
Cardinal chose the cast carefully, with Caiden Finlay as Frederick, Brandon Presley as the monster, and Jessie Gurniak as Inga. Drew Beaudoin and Laurie Niefer play Igor and Frau Blucher, respectively, and the entire ensemble is exceptional.
"A scene that is both iconic in the movie as well as the musical is when the monster and Frederick sing 'Puttin' On the Ritz,'" she said. "Brandon Presley is playing the monster and he is hysterical during that number. The combination of him and Caiden Finlay—who is playing Frederick Frankenstein and is a skilled singer and dancer—is fantastic."
The stage at École secondaire catholique E.J. Lajeunesse was a factor in the direction of the show, as the amount of space available had an impact on everything from blocking to the set design.
Producing "Young Frankenstein" presented several challenges, including the need for many large set pieces and complex dance numbers. However, the cast and crew rose to the occasion, and the end result is a hilarious and must-see show.
"Though the show is a big task, our team and our cast really helped us tackle it, and I am so proud of what we accomplished," Cardinal said.
