Justine Chantale: The London Nurse Harmonizing Country-Pop and Care

Tell us about your career, including your history, where you are from and how you started?

My musical endeavors started with singing in the school choir at 8 years old, then learning guitar and playing in my high school coffee house at the age of 14. After graduating university with a nursing degree, I ventured to London to look for work but also to connect with other musicians. Since then, I have taken up music as a second career, released an EP, three singles, and have played at numerous venues including festivals and concert halls, opening up for big name acts such as Lonestar.

Why did you decide to be a solo artist rather than form a band?

At the time, my maiden name was Chadillon, which I knew many might have difficulty pronouncing, so I went with my first name and middle name, which flowed nicely. I like having the creative control of my music career, especially given I have a second career (nursing). Having the final say in the direction my music goes and how it fits into the other aspects of my life is important to me.

Do you have any recorded music available for fans?

All of my music is available wherever you stream music (Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, etc.) under Justine Chantale.

How would you describe your music?

Country pop with dynamic vocals and heartfelt melodies.

As much as I love having creative control and being independent, it’s my biggest challenge being in charge of the business side of the music industry and the creative side, as well as balancing a full time job.

What makes your music stand out from the others?

I would say my overall sound (vocal) is very different from other up-and-coming country artists. It definitely is a combination of pop rather than traditional country. I make it a point to write my songs to be emotionally charged to connect with my audience, and I hope that’s how others differentiate my music.

What do you like to do outside of music?

I’m a Registered Nurse in London, so I’ve seen a lot in my 30 years of living. I also grew up in the country and have a horse which keeps me tied to my country roots.

Name your two biggest musical influences and why?

I grew up listening to traditional 90s country from my mom and classic rock from my dad. I love the raw, unfiltered sound from both genres, as well as the musicianship. I make it a point not to have my songs or live shows overproduced, and it’s because of these influences.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?

I either write the songs myself, or I write them with another writer. In the past I’ve written with Jay Allan, Al Rowe, Will Hebbes, Mark Rynkun, Roger Beckett and Nick Ross. Main topics are the ups and downs of life – growing up, finding love, heartbreak and everything in between.

What has been your biggest challenge as an artist? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

As much as I love having creative control and being independent, my biggest challenge is being in charge of both the business and creative sides of the music industry, as well as balancing a full-time job. As I network more and more, the process gets easier, but I’m still learning as I go.

What current projects are you working on at the moment?

I’m very excited to be releasing my second EP, “Starting Today,” this Fall.
